These tops are incredible and as rare as it gets! All the way from western Australia, West Red Box is an amazing arid zone timber. It very dense and shows incredible grain patterns and colours. Its rare to find burl figure in these species anyway, particularly outside of Australia.
But finding a Western Red Box Burl in large enough sizes to cut guitar tops from? This is the first and most likely last time I will ever have this amazing material in stock in dimensions large enough for instrument tops.
These Burl sets are recommended for experienced Luthiers. Being a burl they will contain small cracks and splits, maybe the odd bark incursion, all of which may require filling or careful gluing. The species is also prone to attack from wood boring beetles whilst the tree is still alive (long since dead, particularly after the kiln drying process), and some of the outermost sets may contain some small bore holes which again may require filling. If you have any questions or require further images then please don't hesitate to ask, and please do so before purchasing. These sets are kiln dried and ready to work with.It is recommended to stack the set'On Stick' and weighted from above to ensure full air circulation, giving the set time to properly acclimatise. If not being used right away then it is important to stack the wood properly,'On Stick'. Failure to do this could result in the wood cupping / bowing and becoming unusable. Please see all images to show how the grain changes from different angles - and please believe me when I say that these pictures really don't do these tops justice. Sets are photographed both dry and sprayed with Naphtha to show true colour and figuring.
These tops will make some truly fantastic, one-of-a-kind instruments. Dimensions in the images (see set pictured against measurement board) thickness found written on the label bottom right of the set.
